Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal portray cowboys who fall in love with each other in 'Brokeback Mountain' |
The controversial multi-Oscar award winning drama, "Brokeback Mountain," about two homosexual cowboys soon will be turned into an opera by a famous American composer.
The New York City Opera commissioned Charles Wuorinen, an America composer, to write the score.
Gerard Mortier, spokesman for the opera house, confirmed in a statement that Wuorinen had accepted the invitation to compose the opera based on Annie Proulx's story. The opera is scheduled to premiere during City Opera's 2013 spring season.
"Ever since encountering Annie Proulx's extraordinary story I have wanted to make an opera on it, and it gives me great joy that Gerard Mortier and New York City Opera have given me the opportunity to do so," said Wuorinen in a statement.
"Brokeback Mountain" is a fictional story about two men who meet and have a homosexual relationship while on the fictional Brokeback Mountain in Wyoming in 1963. They form a complex relationship that lasts 20 years through both men's marriages.
The film was released in 2005 and subsequently won three Oscars. The film starred recently deceased actor, Heath Ledger, who was nominated for an Oscar.
